CANADA'S ROLE

The Battle of Ortona was a small but very significant battle with major Canadian involvement in the War. Ortona was a Battle Honour given to Canadian units participating in actions to free the city of Ortona. in December 1943 as part of the fighting of the Italian Campaign during the WW2. General Vokes led 1st Canadian Division through the brutal house-to-house fighting and north to the Hitler Line. As the Germans fall back, the Canadians pushed forward.
Ortona was a key battle in terms of building a strong reputation, and proving to the allies the courage of the Canadians as it was mentioned to be the first of the earliest clear victory for the Canadian army.
